Helicopter Tours
Well I have heard it around the grape vine that someone has been looking into setting up a helicopter tour business around the area. Presumably, this would be to offer tours around the mountains and, perhaps, through the park. The park regulations on transportation don't limit flights. I have heard that one stumbling block in the Pincher area has been ranchers disdain for the noise and effects flights may have on their herds. That and they probably don't like change and commercialization very much.

When Dave and i were climbing the Herbst Glacier on Mt. Custer last summer there was a helicopter flying around. We actually wondered if it was the border patrol because it was a week after they caught that group orientals trying to sneak across the border at Chief Mountain crossing. After about the third time flying the same route we decided that it must have been sightseeing flights for tourists because i'm sure they saw us and nobody hasseled us. I'm also quite sure that they flew up from state side somewhere. It sounded to me like they approached Waterton Lake from the south, flew up Boundary Creek, over the col between Chapman and Custer and disappeared into Boulder Pass.

To add to Blair's comment, before the helicopter showed up, there was a lone canoe in Cameron Lake. He came to approximately where the boundary is located, stopped, stared at us climbing up the glacier, then went very quickly back to the north end of the lake. About 30 minutes later, the helicopter showed up. We figured that guy called the border patrol.

Interesting. I always thought they would be fairly lenient over casual infractions like Custer or Crypt peak. I guess it must have been that "flame thrower" you are known to carry around!

I'm sure they are a bit lenient, especially since I'm an American (Blair's on his own). I'm just paranoid, but not paranoid enough to stop me. :-)

If you are looking for something exciting and interesting to do while on vacation, try the Bryce Canyon helicopter rides.

You feel you can take on more? Then try flying a helicopter yourself! The adventure does not have to stop at sightseeing; you have the option to add on to it by taking flying lessons. You can learn how to complete rescue operations, and if you have really taken to it, advance to the next level of being an instructor and flying a helicopter for a living.
