Spring Clean Up

SPRING CLEAN-UP

FOR YOUR INFORMATION --

The Waterton Park community spring clean-up is scheduled this year for Wednesday June 3rd. Park staff will collect yard debris including large branches. Please ensure that any branches put out for pick-up are cut into sections so they are no longer than 4 feet in length. Branches should also be bundled and tied together. Leaves or other yard debris must be bagged and securely tied. Please avoid placing branches in the bags. These requirements help our staff to efficiently and safely remove your yard waste.

Sweeping gravel from roads, sidewalks and yards will start on Monday May 25th and will be ongoing through the month of June.

This year’s clean-up is later than usual due to weather and snow accumulations.

Road Work

AKAMINA PARKWAY CONSTRUCTION

FOR YOUR INFORMATION --

Construction will be under way on the lower part of the Akamina Parkway, weekdays only, from May 19 to May 29. These dates are subject to change depending on how construction proceeds relative to conditions and supply/equipment constraints. From the Park Information Center

During this period, the road will also be closed each night from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Expect short traffic delays, as there will only be a single lane traffic through the construction zone. Please respect lower speed limits, and obey flagmen and signs. Your cooperation is appreciated.

The work includes installation of a culvert and binwall to stabilize a steep slope and to prevent the bank and road from washing out during floods.

Trail Work

Trail Improvements Project 2009

FOR YOUR INFORMATION --

This summer the Bertha Lake and Lakeshore trails will be undergoing trail maintenance work between June 1 and August 30. This work will include improvements to trail drainage and switchbacks, some bridge and campground maintenance, and removal of tripping hazards.

From the Park

Hikers may encounter the trail crew at work, but should not expect delays. The trail crew may be using chainsaws, brushing saws or rock drills, but will shut down the equipment to allow hikers to pass. A helicopter and/or horses will be used occasionally to deliver or remove equipment and materials.

This work is part of a multi-year trail recapitalization plan to improve the overall conditions of Waterton Lakes National Park's renowned trail system. This year's project follows significant improvements to the Carthew-Alderson and Crypt Lake trails last summer.

This project is funded by revenues received from gate fees. It demonstrates Parks Canada’s commitment to reinvest these fees into the maintenance and enhancement of visitor facilities and services. Every effort has been made to minimize the impact of this project on visitors.

Changes In The Park

Well if you venture downtown this year you will see some changes. The Akamina gifts building has undergone a major reno. They added quite a bit to the size, changed the windows quite a bit and added staff accommodations up top.

Wendy from Rod and Wendy's and Zum's has purchased Frank's. She is going to be running it as a steakhouse. I suspect it will quickly end up being the place to go. She is a very strong business women. Plus the only real competition now is the Lodge, and their restaurant is too hard to find, and always suffers from staffing and training issues. The Bayshore will have its nice views, but tends to be more of a draw for one time visits by tourists.

The pizza place has suffered a bit from their move to the old Kentucky Fried chicken building.

Bolted Cracks at Stonehill

Some of the bolted cracks at Stonehill really annoy me. We were climbing at the Pit Stop area on the westside of the lake and there were tremendous gear placements with bolts just off to the side. I have climbed quite a few routes around stonehill like this. With out a doubt they ruin a climb as much as a complete R or X runout. Fixed protection that doesn't fit with a route's character is just bad form.

With that said, anyone is welcome to start a good debate about some of the bolt placements on the upper routes at Expert's choice, or the bolt near the overhang flaring crack on Midsummer's night scream at drywood.
